Hello all,

This week in Reception, we had a wonderful time exploring different emotions using the storybook Colour Monsters by Anna Llenas. The book is a fantastic way to help children understand and express their feelings, as it uses vibrant colours to represent emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, and calmness.

One of the highlights was spending time at the sand and water area, where children showed curiosity and joy as they experimented with pouring, mixing, and building. We talked about how water can feel calming and how sand can be fun and exciting to touch and shape.

We  also created obstacle courses that challenged the children’s energy and determination—perfect for expressing feelings like excitement, pride, or even frustration. It was incredible to see how the children supported each other and used their emotions positively throughout the activities.

By connecting the Colour Monsters story with outdoor play, the children gained a deeper understanding of their emotions in a hands-on, joyful way. This week was a beautiful reminder of how nature and storytelling can come together to help young learners explore their feelings and build emotional awareness.

Phonics

In phonics the children were introduced to the following letter sounds: s, a, t, p.

I have sent reading folders home with a library book and a phonics sheet. Please revisit the letter sounds with your child and provide opportunities for practising letter formation. To help the children form the letters, use the Formation phrases from the phonics sheet e. g,  a- Around the astronaut's helmet and down into space.

Please return the reading folders to school on Monday.

Thank you for your support!

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Sheehan
