Hello all,

What a busy and an exciting week we have had in Foundation!

This week, our focus story was 'The Enormous Turnip' . We listened to the audio book and learnt the songs related to the story. We used adjectives such as: enormous, mighty, gigantic, marvellous to describe the turnip. The children drew illustrations of the story and acted it our. On Thursday we made a big pot of vegetable soup. The children helped to chop the vegetables and we discussed each stage of soup preparation. Everyone tasted the soup, most of the children enjoyed it and even asked for seconds.

On Friday we talked about Remembrance Day. We listened to a story called "Poppy's Day" on CBeebies. This is a child friendly story all about remembering. The children were excellent at understanding elements of this story, and it was a good example of how we should remember others. We have marked Remembrance Day with a minute of silence. We closed our eyes and thought of people who keep us safe. The children made their own poppies using paper, scissors, glue and tape.

Phonics

In phonics the children were introduced to the letter sounds: v, w, x, y.

We were pleased to read the feedback from you in the children's reading records. Looks like the children are really embracing their reading journey.

Please, make sure that the books are returned to school on Monday morning each week.

I have placed your child's log in details for the ebook library in your child's reading folder. You will be able to access all of the books assigned to your child on line. Could you please check that you are able to log in to the online library using the details provided. If you have any issues, please let us know.

Maths

In maths this week, we learnt about circles and triangles. We described the properties of these shapes and we looked for them in the environment. Perhaps the children can look for circular and triangular shaped objects at home or when out and about. We also played a preposition game with shapes.

REMINDERS

  • Can I please ask that the children don't bring  bags into school as we are having problems hanging them all on pegs with winter coats etc. Your child should not need to bring anything into the unit unless they are nappies. If your child is wet we will use the spare clothes that we have in the setting to change them.
  • Children are not allowed to wear jewellery or nail polish.
  • Please do not send your child in with toys from home.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs Sheehan
