Hello all,

This week we have been learning about the World Map. After an adult directed activity, the children discussed their own experiences of other countries and places they know about. We discussed weather in other countries and the climate. The children were aware of the temperature changes around the world so we discussed the impact this can have. One child mentioned the fires so we discussed wildfires and the children learnt how they are put out. We learnt how the helicopters scoop the water up to put the fires out. We also looked at volcanoes and identified places on the map where volcanoes exist. The children talked about the floods in Potters Bar under the bridge so we extended this by looking at news reports and why we thought it had happened. This topic will continue next week.

Phonics

This week in phonics the children were introduced to the letter sounds: ear, air and er.  Our tricky words were: are, sure and pure. We have now introduced all of the letter sounds taught in Reception year. It is important that the children practise the sounds at home as well as in school so that their reading becomes more effortless and fluent.

Maths

This week in maths we were identifying numbers that are one more from the given number. Next week we will focus on numbers that are one less from the given number.

Our focus story for this week was 'Handa's Surprise'. The children acted out the story and had an opportunity to taste a variety of fruit.
